Sustainability is not treated as a separate label added after a
product has been designed. It begins before production, with the
choice of material, dimensions, finish and application, and
continues through inspection, care, future project phases and
replacement requirements.
Capramont & Co’s sustainability approach is centred on
longevity rather than broad environmental claims. Hardware is
manufactured to order from solid brass and specialist engineering
metals, specified before production, inspected before dispatch and
recorded to support later project phases and reorders. Materials
and finishes are selected according to the intended environment
to reduce the risk of unsuitable specification, avoidable remakes
and premature replacement.

Getting it right before making it
Made-to-order production should begin from a controlled record, not
from assumptions. Products, dimensions, fixing centres, finishes,
quantities and approvals should be resolved before an order is
released for manufacture.
The Capramont Hardware Schedule, project review and drawing-review
routes are designed to bring those decisions into one working
specification. Missing or unresolved information can then be
identified before it becomes a manufacturing or installation
problem.

Material suitability
Longevity depends on selecting for the environment
Different interiors place different demands on cabinet hardware.
A living brass finish selected for its changing character serves a
different purpose from a stable stainless-steel finish or a
performance material intended for moisture, salt air or demanding
use.
Solid brass and living finishes
Capramont Heritage finishes are applied to solid brass and are
intended to develop naturally through handling, atmosphere and
time.
This gradual deepening and patination is part of the material
character. A changing finish should not automatically be
interpreted as a failed finish requiring replacement.
Stainless steel
Stainless steel provides a more stable visual and performance
option where corrosion resistance, regular handling or a
consistent appearance is important.
The correct grade and finish should be selected according to
the location, cleaning regime and expected exposure.
Marine-grade 316L stainless steel
Marine-grade 316L stainless steel is available for demanding
environments where prolonged moisture, salt air or greater
corrosion resistance must be considered.
It may be appropriate for coastal, waterfront, yacht-adjacent
or other exposed interiors, subject to project review and
maintenance conditions.
Naval brass
Naval brass is offered as a specialist Atelier material where
increased environmental performance and a distinctive solid
metal specification are required.
Its suitability should be reviewed against the specific
interior, finish expectation and exposure conditions.
Titanium
Titanium is selected for its material stability, corrosion
resistance and high-performance engineering character.
It provides a specialist long-term material option for projects
where performance, low mass and a distinctive tactile quality
form part of the specification.
Aluminium and specialist coatings
Precision-machined aluminium and specialist coated stainless
steels provide further options where weight, colour, surface
performance or a particular architectural expression is
required.
Coated materials must be selected and maintained according to
their specific finish characteristics.
Material selection
No single material is automatically the most responsible choice
for every project. The most appropriate specification is the one
that can meet the expected use, atmosphere, maintenance conditions
and visual requirements for the longest practical period.
Living finishes
Ageing can be part of the design rather than a reason to replace
Capramont’s unlacquered Heritage finishes are intended to respond to
their surroundings. Frequently touched areas may brighten while
sheltered areas deepen, allowing each piece to acquire an individual
pattern of use.
This behaviour should be understood before the finish is approved.
A client who expects complete visual uniformity may be better served
by a more stable material or finish. A client who values natural
development may choose living brass precisely because it does not
remain visually static.
Clear finish guidance reduces the risk of normal patination being
mistaken for deterioration and helps clients retain hardware that is
performing as intended.
Samples and sign-off
Physical approval before made-to-order production
Photography can communicate the general direction of a finish, but
screens, lighting and surrounding materials can alter how it appears.
Physical finish review provides a more dependable basis for an
important made-to-order decision.
Capramont offers finish samples, a finish sign-off knob and project
sample options so that material, colour, texture and scale can be
reviewed alongside the intended cabinetry, stone, timber and interior
palette.
The purpose of sign-off is not only aesthetic. It is intended to
reduce the risk of manufacturing a complete project batch against an
unsuitable or misunderstood finish decision.
Care should support the material rather than fight it
Ordinary care is based on light, appropriate intervention. Hardware
should be wiped with a soft cloth, cleaned with mild soap only where
necessary and dried thoroughly.
Harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive products, solvents and unsuitable
metal polishes can alter or damage a finish. Unnecessary
over-cleaning can also work against the natural behaviour of living
materials.
The correct care method depends on the selected material and finish.
Understanding that method helps preserve the intended appearance and
reduces avoidable refinishing or replacement.
Replacement hardware should begin with the cabinetry already in place
Replacing cabinet hardware does not always require new doors, drawer
fronts or altered drilling. Where technically suitable, existing
fixing centres can be reviewed and matched through a standard or
custom-centre specification.
Capramont’s replacement-centres guidance and drawing-review service
allow existing holes, dimensions and installation constraints to be
assessed before new hardware is manufactured.
A custom solution cannot be guaranteed for every cabinet or
installation. Where it is technically achievable, however, matching
the existing cabinetry may avoid unnecessary alteration and help
extend the useful life of the wider interior.
Specification records support later phases and reorders
A hardware scheme may need to remain consistent across several rooms,
project phases or later additions. Keeping a controlled record of the
original collection, dimensions, centres, materials and finishes
makes future review more dependable.

Material and finish availability can change over time, so permanent
availability cannot be guaranteed. Retaining the approved
specification nevertheless gives future review a far stronger
starting point than relying on memory, photography or an unidentified
sample.
Inspection and quality control
Hardware is checked before it is released for dispatch
Completed hardware is inspected against the relevant manufacturing
and project requirements before being prepared for delivery.
Dimensional, finish and quantity checks are intended to identify
issues before the products reach the installation site.
Quality control cannot remove every possible project risk. It does,
however, provide a controlled stage between manufacturing and
dispatch where discrepancies can be investigated before installation.
For made-to-order hardware, this stage is important because an
incorrect centre, dimension or finish can affect not only the product
itself but also the cabinetry and project programme around it.
Material recovery
Solid metals retain material value beyond their first use
The principal base materials used by Capramont are metals that can
generally be recovered through appropriate specialist
metal-recycling routes.
The practical route depends on the exact base material, finish,
coating, attached components and facilities available in the local
area. Products should therefore be separated and identified correctly
before entering an end-of-life recovery process.
Capramont does not currently describe its products as containing a
fixed percentage of recycled material and does not operate a published
product take-back scheme. Recyclability should not be confused with a
guarantee that a product will be collected or recycled.
Responsible specification
A longer-lived result depends on decisions made across the project
The manufacturer controls only part of the outcome. Designers,
joiners, contractors, installers and clients also influence whether
hardware remains appropriate and serviceable over time.
Specify for the actual environment
Consider moisture, salt exposure, cleaning products, handling
levels and the client’s expectations for natural ageing before
selecting the material and finish.
Confirm centres before drilling
Cabinet drawings and drilling information should be checked
against the approved hardware dimensions before doors and
drawer fronts are prepared.
Approve physical finishes where possible
Review the finish against the actual cabinetry, stone, timber,
lighting and surrounding interior rather than relying only on
a screen image.
Keep the approved project record
Retain the schedule, product references, dimensions and finish
approval so that future repairs, additions and reorders can be
reviewed against the original specification.
Install with appropriate fixings
Correct drilling, fixing length, alignment and tightening help
protect both the hardware and cabinetry from avoidable damage
during installation and use.
Follow the correct care guidance
Use the care method appropriate to the selected material and
avoid harsh or abrasive products that can damage the finish.
