Some metals are chosen for the impression they make. These are chosen for what they can do. Capramont & Co brings material thinking from marine, aerospace and motor-racing engineering to made-to-order cabinet and joinery hardware. The disciplines overlap; the material properties matter more than the label.

Corrosion resistance, weight, strength and surface wear are considered alongside appearance. Eight material and surface options, each chosen for a different set of reasons.

01 · Marine & coastal materials

The Elements Have Opinions.

For coastal air, humidity and marine-adjacent joinery. Four distinct routes: 316L stainless steel, naval brass, nickel-coated naval brass and solid Grade 5 Titanium. Exposure determines the choice.

Solid 316L · corrosion resistance

316L Stainless Steel

A cool head in difficult conditions. Solid molybdenum-alloyed 316L stainless steel is chosen where moisture, humidity and salt-laden air place greater demands on cabinet hardware.

Why this material

Molybdenum improves resistance to localised chloride attack compared with common 304 stainless steel. Prolonged seawater contact can still cause pitting and crevice corrosion.

Consider for

Coastal homes, yacht-interior cabinetry, spas and humid fitted interiors; review any direct or sustained seawater contact separately.

Solid alloy · marine material

Naval Brass

Warmth with an unusually practical side. Naval brass is a copper-zinc-tin alloy with the depth and natural colour of brass, developed for service in more demanding environments.

Why this material

Tin improves the corrosion behaviour of this copper-zinc alloy in marine conditions, although brass can still be vulnerable to dezincification under adverse exposure.

Yacht cabinetry, coastal residences and interiors seeking a warm solid metal.

Naval brass · engineered surface

Nickel-Coated Naval Brass — Satin Nickel

A cooler manner, with substance underneath. An engineered satin nickel surface sits over naval brass, pairing silver-toned restraint with an underlying marine-material specification.

Why this material

Naval brass provides the substrate; the nickel layer determines the satin appearance. Coating type, thickness and continuity matter in demanding exposure.

Coastal cabinetry, bathrooms, hospitality and selected yacht interiors.

Marine · Aerospace · Motor Racing

Grade 5 Titanium

A light touch, with considerable resolve. Solid Grade 5 Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) combines high strength and low mass with excellent resistance to seawater corrosion. Its distinctive grey is the character of the metal itself.

Why this material

A naturally formed oxide film protects the alloy in seawater and salt-laden environments. Its high strength-to-weight ratio also explains its use in aerospace and motor-racing engineering.

Coastal residences, yacht-interior cabinetry, selected marine joinery and specialist interiors where corrosion resistance and reduced mass matter.

02 · Aerospace & low-mass materials

Lightness Is a Serious Matter.

Precision-machined high-strength aluminium in black or white, for designs where mass matters. Grade 5 Titanium, featured under Marine & Coastal, shares aerospace’s strength-to-weight advantage.

Low mass · black powdercoat

High-Strength Aluminium — Black

The advantage of being light without looking slight. High-strength aluminium is precision-machined into crisp forms, then given a controlled black powder-coated surface.

Why this material

The low weight comes from the aluminium; the black powdercoat controls appearance. Coastal suitability depends on alloy, pretreatment and coating integrity.

Consider for

Contemporary cabinetry, larger-format pulls and weight-conscious joinery.

Low mass · white powdercoat

High-Strength Aluminium — White

Restraint can be quite deliberate. The same lightweight aluminium takes on a controlled white powder-coated finish, allowing hardware to sit quietly against pale joinery.

Why this material

Low mass comes from the aluminium; the white finish comes from the coating. Exact alloy and surface preparation matter when exposure becomes demanding.

Consider for

Minimal kitchens, wardrobes, fitted furniture and larger pulls.

03 · Motor-racing surfaces

The Surface Has Substance.

Carbon-coated stainless steel in black or silver: engineered surfaces considered for repeated contact and resistance to wear.

Stainless steel · carbon-based surface

Carbon-Coated Stainless Steel — Black

Black, with more on its mind than appearance. Precision-machined stainless steel carries a carbon-based engineered coating selected for repeated contact and resistance to wear.

Why this material

The steel supplies structure; the coating supplies its engineered surface properties. Exact wear and corrosion resistance depend on the coating system and test conditions.

Consider for

Bars, kitchens, hotels, clubs and other frequently handled fitted interiors.

Stainless steel · carbon-based surface

Carbon-Coated Stainless Steel — Silver

An understated surface with an industrious nature. Silver-toned carbon-coated stainless steel preserves a clean metallic appearance while addressing repeated handling.

Why this material

Stainless-steel construction is paired with a wear-focused surface. Neither coating type nor corrosion performance should be assumed from colour alone.

Hospitality, wellness spaces, busy kitchens, bars and high-touch cabinetry.

Material & specification

The Right Metal Is Never an Afterthought.

Begin with the design; then consider the conditions it must meet. Sea air and direct seawater are different briefs. Assess moisture, cleaning, fixing metals, contact between dissimilar metals, coating type and surface exposure alongside the chosen hardware.

Made to order in England, with custom sizes and fixing centres available by specification. No minimum order on eligible designs. Final material availability and suitability remain project-specific.
